real original Xperia Tablet UI Mode for sony xperia

here is an extra mod for the xperia users, expecially z tablet users, who don like the new, odd phone ui interface since updating to 4.2.2 that reduces the limited screen height for an additional status/navigation bar like me

this is my first mod for Sony xperia devices, and the final mod since i have decided to sell my xperia tablet z (docomo version) due to the locked bootloader (docomo's version so-o3e cannot be unlocked) which prevents me from using my own kernels and roms. and more importantly, however, i missed Samsung's multiwindows function so much and i need it. dont tell me Sony has the small apps function instead, it is far behind Samsung's multiwindows which i can run any app in a separate window if i want to, including non-samsung apps on my note2. no disrepect here, just my opinion

anyway, i know many ppl would like to update their tablet z to Andriod 4.2.2, or updated already but went back to 4.1.2 finally simply due to the old tablet mode, and here is a simple howto:

a bit more info:

it is the dpi of the screen that determine whether it is a phone or tablet and call for a phoneui or tabletui "in general" (i will not go further in this topic here). however, we can force the device to show a phoneui/tabletui even if it is actually a tablet/phone by modding the system files. one of which is the PhoneWindowManager found under com/android/internal/policy/impl/ (android.policy.jar)

ok, lucky enough, in this 4.2.2 rom (SGP321_10.3.1.A.2.67_1273-0364_R2B), we only need to override/modify two functions: hasNavigationBar()Z and hasSystemNavBar()Z

a tablet mode contains a SystemNavBar but no NavigationBar. simply speaking, a NavigationBar is the bottom bar that only contains the back, home, tasks soft keys, while the SystemNavBar is what we found in most tablets, resides at the bottom of the screen and contains the three navigation soft keys or buttons, back, home, tasks on the left (navigation bar), plus other info icons like clock, signal, on the right (system bar)

therefore, in order to bring back the tabletui, just fulfil these two requirements:
1/. hasNavigationBar = no
2/. hasSystemNavBar = yes

the changes required to the PhoneWindowManager.smali are shown below (note: for this particular rom only, may need some more changes in other roms)

.method public hasNavigationBar()Z
.registers 2

.prologue
.line 5325
### iget-boolean v0, p0, Lcom/android/internal/policy/impl/PhoneWindowManager;->mHasNavigationBar:Z
#** force tablet
const/4 v0, 0x0 # always return false

return v0
.end method

.method public hasSystemNavBar()Z
.registers 2

.prologue
.line 1598
### iget-boolean v0, p0, Lcom/android/internal/policy/impl/PhoneWindowManager;->mHasSystemNavBar:Z
#** force tablet
const/4 v0, 0x1 # always return true

return v0
.end method

remarks:
anything after a hash (#) are comments line and will be ignored by the compiler, and
### this is the original code
#** this is my remark/comment

the actual changes required are the line immediate below my comment lines, ended with "# always return false (or true)" in bold

that's it! simple enough for modders!

however, if u want to mod it further like adding back the small apps tray then you will need to modify framework-res and systemui, which is not covered here in this post

for non-technical users who dont know how to make the changes, dont worry, i will provide a modded version later

this is an incomplete but working demo for implementing Sony Bravia Engine in Gallery3D on Samsung Galaxy S2/Samsung Galaxy Note for Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread/Android 4.0.3 Ice-Cream Sandwich. once you have installed it, your existing Gallery3D WILL BE REPLACED by this demo. note that no performance or memory tweaks, stress tests, etc were performed in this demo, and bugs or force closes are expected but not observed so far

EDIT: the current version is incompatible with I9000 yet

i considered it a success based on the following facts and results:
- the library needed by the Sony Bravia Engine for converting images was loaded and being used by the gallery app
- the gallery app warned against missing libraries if they could not be accessed
- the be_photo file did played a role and the outputs were back to nornal (without the Bravia engine) if it was not accesssible
- the images were processed/converted by the engine during the image creation
- the outputs produced (screenshots captured) by the Samsung Gallery3D were identical to those produced by Sony Gallery installed on my device in terms of file sizes, checksums, etc
- the outputs produced by the Samsung Gallery3D alone without the Bravia engine were different in terms of file sizes, checksums, etc

i cannot, however, assure it is 100% ported for the reason that i do not own a SE device. but even i do, the outputs cannot be compared directly due to different resolutions, color engine, brightness used, etc

PLEASE READ THIS POST CAREFULLY BEFORE DOWNLOADING OR INSTALLING THIS DEMO!!

system requirements:
- gingerbread/ice-cream sandwich
- rooted
- CWM recovery
- built and tested on:
Samsung Galaxy S2 GT-I9100- 2.3.6 - I9100XWKK5
Samsung Galaxy S2 GT-I9100 - 4.0.3 - I9100XXLP6
Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000 - 2.3.6 - N7000XXLC1
Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000 - 4.0.3 - I9220ZCLP6

files to be copied to your phone:
- /system/app/Gallery3D.apk
- /system/etc/be_photo
- /system/lib/libbmpcnv.so
- /system/lib/libiwi.so
- /system/lib/libiwiOmx.so
- /system/lib/libiwiOmxUtil.so

installation:
backup your files first!!!
then, either:
1/. with CWM
- put the zip file in your sdcard
- reboot into recovery mode
- choose the zip file and select update
- reboot your phone

or:
2/. with File Manager/Explorer/shell
- extract the zip file
- copy the system folder extracted from the zip to your /system (rw permission is required)

settings:
- NO EXTRA setting is required
- NO NEED to edit any prop file

turning on the Sony Bravia Engine:
- NO NEED to do anything, the engine will be turned on by default

tunning off the Sony Braiva Engine:
- you can only turn it off TEMPORARILY (*see below)

uninstalling the demo:
- the simpliest way is to overwrite the Gallery3D.apk with your previous version
- remove the files listed above if you want a complete uninstall but not a must

how to check the Sony Bravia Engine is loaded and running:
- create a new folder in your external sd card is suggested, eg /mnt/sdcard/external_sd/sbetest/, then copy an image file of your choice in that folder
- within that newly created folder, make a new copy of the image file you just copied there, and rename it by adding a tag 'BE-OFF' to the filename without quotes. now you will have two identical images here and read like eg, myimage1.jpg + myimage1BE-OFF.jpg, myimage2.jpg + myBE-OFFimage2.jpg, etc. the engine will ignore all files with the BE-OFF tag so a normal output will be produced instead
- if you created the new folder in your external sd card, go to Settings > Storage, and select Unmount SD card, followed by selecting Mount SD card again as to force a media rescan
- if you created the new folder elsewhere but not in your external sd card, perform a media scan either by running a third party app like 'Rescan Media', which can be found on the market
- start Gallery SBEDemo and you should see the new folder and files just created
- then,

1/. for normal users
- browser the two images and you should see the differences in sharpness, color, etc. if you do, then the Sony Bravia Engine should be running properly
- do a screen capture for the two images and save them. compare the two file sizes and they should be differ (beware of the zoom in/out buttons, etc and make sure they look identical when capturing the screenshots)

2/. for advanced users
I - by checking the pids
- get the pid of the gallery (media) by:
a) pidof com.cooliris.media
or,
b) ps | grep media | grep -v grep
- get the pid that is using the lib file /system/lib/libbmpcnv.so after clicking an image in the gallery by:
fuser /system/lib/libbmpcnv.so
- the pid returned from fuser should be equal to the pid of the gallery
II - by checking the file size and checksum of the files
- perform screen captures for both images
- compare the checksums and they should differ
III - by comparing the output produced by SonyEricsson's Gallery
- install SonyEricsson's Gallery and make sure it runs properly with the bravia engine
- perform screen captures for the images in both Gallery SBEDemo and SonyEricsson's Gallery
- compare the checksums and they should be identical
IV - by reading log file
- read the log by logcat and you should read messages like 'BE-OFF' tag or '### entering be 111' with tag MediaItemTexture

in order to prove it further, you can:
- click on an image without BE-OFF tag, press the home button and switch to another app or home, rename the /etc/be_photo, then press the home button to switch back to gallery again to see the differences, and a log will be printed and read like the following:
01-04 22:43:56.194: ERROR/BitmapConverterNative(1382): Failed to LoadParameters, Missing Parameter files ==========
- kill the gallery app and rename the /system/lib/libbmpcnv.so, start gallery again and click on an image, you will get a force close because the required library file libbmpcnv.so has been removed/renamed, and you will find a log message like:

info update - SGS2 and Sony Bravia Engine

UPDATE2: SGS2 ICS 4.0.3 Sony Bravia Engine demo with wallpaper rendering available

UPDATE: SGS2 Gallery Sony Bravia Engine demo

first of all i would like to say thank you for your supports, either for the finally output or for me.

after careful consideration, i tend to release a demo so that ppl can see the real effects when the braiva engine is turned on in the samsung gallery.

for the development, i think it will be better to let interested developers to join and enhance it in their own way with their own expertise individually or as a group. i believe this will benefit the whole community. i will publish a simple guide for the developers instead of working on it alone. however, it requires more time and efforts to deal with the smali files, plus dependencies, permissions, libraries and so forth in this case.

in fact, this is what i planned to. so probably in the coming few days, there will be some more info added. and hopefully, someone will produce a I9000 version, and perhaps on other android devices as well

thank you for your patients, and thank you for my fans and supporters

and as usual, i do enjoy sharing new or dirty tweaks and mods to all of you :D

Samsung Galaxy and Sony Bravia project - resume?

UPDATE: info update - SGS2 and Sony Bravia Engine

UPDATE2: SGS2 Gallery Sony Bravia Engine demo

the row between me and one of the forum was finally settled and i planned to resume the development of this mod in SGS and SGS2, or probably on all other Android devices. however, it looks like the Sony Bravia Engine thing has been forgotten by ppl already coz i couldnt see ppl talking about this anymore, and perhaps nobody wants it now ...

if you r one of the fans of this mod, pls kindly show me your support by making a comment to this post, give it a like, sending it to your friends and tell them about this, etc, so that i can see if there are at least someone still waiting for this mod around the world. otherwise, i just keep it for my own use

thank you

see the differences with Sony Bravia Engine turned on in Samsung Galaxy S2 I9100 with default gallery (Gallery3D.apk). for those who believed Sony Bravia Engine can only be run on Sonys device but not others, you can still say that this is not a "100% port" and i will not argue with you. however, you must admit that it can be run on a SGS2 too

EDIT: these screenshots were made on 15 Dec 2011, but for some reasons the publish date was postponed. there is no schedule for resuming the development yet, until a row with one of the forum is resolved.

also note that the images on the left are identical to those on the rigth hand side (except the bottom one), indicating the outputs from Samsung Gallery3D with Sony Bravia Engine and SonyEricsson Gallery3D are indifferent

hi all,

after i mistakenly reported the Sony Bravia Engine worked with SGS2 before, i decided to test if the Bravia Engine can be used on Galaxy S2 myself from the beginning

after spending a whole day in dealing with the files and dependencies, i think i have found something finally and yielded the following results :

1 - the Gallery3D (SemcGallery3D.apk) from X10 works together with the stock one

2 - the library file libswiqibmpcnv.so is loaded after the SE Gallary is launced, and fuser shows the libswiqibmpcnv.so is being used by the SE Gallary

3 - the be_photo is loaded by the libswiqibmpcnv.so when a photo is selected in the SE Gallery. and if it is removed, libswiqibmpcnv.so reports an error

and finally, the outputs for two HD images found on the internet from stock Samsung Gallery3D.apk and SonyEricsson SemcGallery3D.apk with be_photo loaded, taken by screen capture

UPDATE: good news some good news for Sony Bravia Engine and Samsung Galaxy S2

i started to doubt about the Bravia stuff after i posted it days ago, i asked myself some questions:

- how can the engine work with the properties in prop file alone?
- without any library files or apps, what makes the engine to load the be_movie and be_photo file?
- if this trick really works, then the engine should be known by the Android system in advance or being part of it. does it?

unfortunately, it looks like we were all misled by the brand name - Sony, we believed their technologies in display units are better ... i must admit that i was one of them

I searched for the Sony Bravia Engine thing and found that we need at least two more lib files to start the engine: libswiqibmpcnv.so and libiwiOmxUtil.so, which should be come with Android devices made by Sony

moreover, it is likely that, without an proper application, these lib files wont be loaded into our Android system

as a result, it means that, the Bravia Engine was not working with our SGS2 before, at least for now

please accept my sincere apologies

PS if you followed my installation steps, it is safe to remove the files with the instructions stated in my previous post and it should not do any harm to your system

for more information, pleas read this

the graphic engine used by some Sony Android mobile devices, aka Sony Bravia Engine, has been ported to SGS2 by GadgetCheck, a XDA member.

it is basically a new set of data for fine tunning the qualities of the graphics shown on your screen with another approach. the differences can be seen quite easily when you are viewing photos, where the sharpnesses are increased together with more realistic object layers (not yet tested with movies, although some said the quality for playing HD movies looks good)

the installation is easy enough as well as rolling back to your existing files. simply download the zip file here and then put the files, be_movie and be_photo, into /system/etc/

now, one more step needs to be done in order to turn this engine on. i suggest u to create a file named local.prop and put it under /data directory, although GadgetCheck suggested to add the lines into /system/build.prop instead. one reason for putting the required lines (or properties) in /data/local.prop is that it will be much easier for normal user to edit a file under /data rather then the /system directory, where the /data/local.prop will be loaded during system boot up process as well

below shows the lines required to switch on the Bravia engine:

#Sony Bravia Engine Service (this line is a remark only)
ro.service.swiqi.supported=true
persist.service.swiqi.enable=1

another reason for putting these lines in /data/local.prop is, in case you want to roll back to previous settings, just delete the local.prop if it didnt exist before, or by editing the file again, followed by removing the be_movie and be_photo from /system/etc and reboot the phone
